Group Swim Lessons
Group swim lessons are a great way for your child to learn and strengthen their skills in the water amongst friends.
The Daviess County Family YMCA is offering Levels 1-6 for children ages 4-12. All classes follow the YMCA’s overall swimming lesson curriculum. Levels are explained below. Please do your best to choose which level you feel your child is in. For assistance and questions, email [email protected] or [email protected].
STAGE 1: is the beginning of water acclimation where your child will increase their comfort in the water, learn basic water safety skills and will lay the foundation for their future swimming progress. This level is suggested for children just beginning their swim journey.
STAGE 2: encourages forward movement in the water and basic water safety skills performed more independently. This level is suggested for children who are comfortable with floating and putting their head underwater.
STAGE 3: develops forward movement and water skills at longer distances than previous levels, in order to begin building endurance and stamina. This level is suggested for children beginning to swim independently.
STAGE 4: introduces basic stroke technique as well as more advanced water safety skills. This level is suggested for children who can swim half the length of the pool on their own.
STAGE 5: introduces breaststroke and butterfly and reinforces water safety through treading water and sidestroke. This level is suggested for children who can swim the whole length of the pool on their own.
STAGE 6: refines stroke technique on all major competitive strokes and encourages swimming as part of a healthy lifestyle. This level is suggested for swimmers who can swim the whole length of the pool using any of the four major competitive strokes (front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly).
Not sure which Stage your child should be in? Read through the Lesson Selector here to help you decide. For further assistance, contact the Aquatics Director or Coordinator at 812-254-4481 or [email protected] or [email protected].
